On 8 December, the official launch ceremony of the “EU4Sevan+: Sustainable Water Management for Resilient Community Development in Armenia” project took place in Gavar, Gegharkunik region. The initiative is jointly funded by the European Union (EU) and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and is implemented by GIZ.
The project has a total budget of EUR 7.5 million, including EUR 3.5 million from the EU and EUR 4 million from BMZ. EU4Sevan+ aims to enhance sustainable water resource management, upgrade wastewater treatment practices in the Lake Sevan basin, and support Armenia in addressing key challenges within the water sector.
EU4Sevan+ builds on the results and experience of the EU4Sevan project (2020–2025), expanding activities related to integrated water management, environmental protection, and resilient community development.
During the opening event, the EU Ambassador reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to environmental sustainability, economic development, and cultural heritage preservation. The Ambassador also highlighted Lake Sevan’s strategic significance as one of Armenia’s primary freshwater reserves, supporting biodiversity and offering opportunities for fisheries, recreation, and tourism.
Through EU4Sevan+, the EU and the German Government reiterate their continued partnership with Armenia in promoting sustainable natural resource management and protecting Lake Sevan for future generations.
