Site Visit to Hakhum Reservoir and Pumping Station: Technical Assessment and Rehabilitation Planning

21.02.2026

The company’s engineering specialists carried out a field visit to Hakhum Reservoir and the associated pumping station to evaluate the structural and operational condition of the hydraulic and electromechanical systems.

Hakhum Reservoir is located in the Tavush Province of Armenia, on the Hakhum River near Paravakar village, at an elevation of 670 meters above sea level. The reservoir was commissioned in 1985 for river flow regulation and irrigation purposes.

Key technical characteristics of the reservoir include:

  • Surface area: 0.84 km²
  • Average depth: 15 meters
  • Total storage capacity: 12 million m³
  • Useful storage capacity: 11 million m³
  • Dam type: earth-fill dam with a sandy-clay core
  • Dam length: 652 meters
  • Maximum dam height: 46 meters
  • Discharge capacity: 4.9 m³/s
  • Water release system: via the Hakhum pumping station

During the on-site inspection, the team assessed:

  • The condition of the embankment and protective concrete structures
  • The impact of long-term operation and water level fluctuations
  • The technical condition of inlet and outlet hydraulic structures
  • The structural condition of the pumping station building
  • The wear level of pumps, valves, and pipeline systems
  • The functionality of electrical and mechanical equipment

A working meeting was held on site with relevant stakeholders and operational representatives. Discussions focused on identifying priority interventions required to ensure safe, efficient, and sustainable operation of the reservoir system.

The following preliminary rehabilitation measures were outlined:

  1. Detailed technical assessment and preparation of a defect report
  2. Comprehensive audit of pumping equipment and evaluation of replacement with energy-efficient units
  3. Rehabilitation or replacement of pipelines and valve assemblies
  4. Modernization of electrical supply and automation systems
  5. Restoration of embankment protection and concrete surfaces
  6. Development of a phased rehabilitation and investment program

The company remains committed to providing full engineering and design support to ensure the long-term reliability, safety, and operational efficiency of the reservoir and pumping station infrastructure.
