Modernization of the Ayghehovit-Vazashen Irrigation System, Funded by “The H. Hovnanian Family Foundation”
As part of the project, the modernization of an irrigation system built during the Soviet era was undertaken. The system includes a river intake on the Aghstev River, a pumping station, a pumping pipeline, a sedimentation basin, and a distribution network.
The modernization aimed to improve the synchronized operation of the pumps and the network, reduce electricity consumption, and enable the expansion of irrigated land areas.
Thanks to the technical measures implemented and the optimization of hydraulic regimes and pressure levels, the system now enables proper irrigation for over 17 hectares of orchards and arable land that previously experienced insufficient or irregular water supply.
In total, about 250 hectares of agricultural land—currently under-irrigated or not irrigated at all—will be efficiently irrigated. As a result, crop yields are expected to increase by up to 60%, due to the improved efficiency and reliability of the irrigation system.
The proposed system optimizations are also expected to result in significant savings in water and electricity:
