During the development of the design and cost estimate documentation for the renovation of the canal, a full visual inspection and non-destructive assessment were conducted along the entire length of the canal. These inspections aimed to evaluate the deterioration of the canal walls and the physical wear of the concrete in the hydraulic structures, taking into consideration environmental and urban development standards. This approach was particularly important as the canal was originally constructed during the Soviet era, and some sections even earlier — with limited archival documentation available regarding the technical, economic, and environmental planning at the time.

The design process prioritized engineering measures aimed at reducing significant water losses in the system, while ensuring the operational capacity of the canal was preserved.

Measures were also incorporated to reduce construction costs by using innovative building materials during reconstruction, increasing the efficiency of structural, concrete, and lining works.

Where necessary, hydrotechnical valves and technological control units installed on the canal were also repaired or replaced with simplified, more durable, and modernized solutions to ensure better operational reliability.
